First Lady’s Trip to Spain Draws Criticism

A quiet holiday in a lavish Mediterranean retreat for the first lady and her daughter has turned into a bit of a headache for a White House trying to battle bad economic news at home.

Michelle Obama took her younger daughter, Sasha, to southern Spain this week for a mother-daughter getaway. But when you are married to the president, it has a way of becoming a mother-daughter-Secret-Service getaway that invariably sweeps into town, takes over much of a pricey hotel and leaves the taxpayers with a hefty bill.

Obama must break his tax promise

leave a comment »

Between now and the November elections, the biggest political fight in the US is likely to be about taxes. Unless Congress acts, big tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 during George Bush’s presidency will expire at the end of the year.

With the recovery faltering, Republicans and Democrats understand that reversing all of the cuts so soon is a bad idea, but this is where their agreement stops.

In reality Obama has already broken his tax promise. Federal taxes have doubled on many items and services already.

That “Not one penny” of tax promise was broken within his first year as President.

Majority of Small Business Sector Facing Higher Taxes Under Obama Plan

leave a comment »

The Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats have said that they want to raise taxes in the top two income tax rates in January 2011.  Under their plan, the 33 percent rate will rise to 36 percent, and the 35 percent rate will rise to 39.6 percent automatically in January.  These rates affect families and small business owners earning at least $200,000 per year

Unlike corporations, small businesses usually don’t pay their own taxes.  Rather, business profits flow through to the business owner.  The business owner pays taxes on her small business by adding the profits to her income tax form.  Therefore, personal income taxes are the same thing as small business taxes.

Pence promises full-fledged GOP campaign to keep Bush tax cuts

Republicans Saturday promised a full-fledged campaign to make permanent a suite of expiring Bush-era tax cuts and accused President Obama and other Democratic leaders for not taking steps yet to prevent their sunset.

As part of a broader attack on Obama’s economic agenda, House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence of Indiana accused Democrats in the weekly GOP radio address of wanting to embrace an unprecedented tax hike.

Changing Tune, Administration Defends Insurance Mandate as a Tax

leave a comment »

When Congress required most Americans to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty, Democrats denied that they were creating a new tax. But in court, the Obama administration and its allies now defend the requirement as an exercise of the government’s “power to lay and collect taxes.”

And that power, they say, is even more sweeping than the federal power to regulate interstate commerce.

Administration officials say the tax argument is a linchpin of their legal case in defense of the health care overhaul and its individual mandate, now being challenged in court by more than 20 states and several private organizations.
